Company Summary

The Steel industry comes under Basic Material group. It’s a commodity type industry.

Industry Strengths

Good domestic demand due to rapid urbanization, growing infrastructure and real estate requirements
Availability of iron ore and coal in India
Replacement and up gradation of old infrastructure like airports, railways fuelling demand
Requirement of steel pipes for transporting fuel and gas safely and cheaply

Industry Weakness

Erratic supply of raw materials like iron ore due to action by environment ministry and courts and coal due to excessive demand from power sector
Rising cost of raw material ie. Iron ore and coal
Dependence on imports of coking coal
Highly capital intensive
Land acquisition and environmental hurdles
Dumping of finished goods by China and other Asian economies.

TATA Steel Limited is a diversified steel producer. The Company is engaged in the business of steel making, including raw material and finishing operations. Tata Steel is Asia’s first and India’s second largest private sector steel company.

With the takeover of Corus Steel (Europe’s second largest steel producer), Tata Steel is now the sixth largest steel company in the world with over 30mtpa of steel capacity.
Tata Steel India has one of the lowest-cost steel-making facilities in the world comprising the 9.7mtpa steel facility at Jamshedpur in Jharkhand and the recently commissioned 3.0mtpa Kalinganagar unit in Odisha.

Segments and Products

The Company's segments are Steel and Others.

Its operations predominantly relate to manufacture of steel.

The Others business segment comprises tubes, bearings, refractories, pigments, port operations and town services.

Its products include flat products, including hot rolled, cold rolled, metallic coated, direct rolled, tubes, pre-finished steels, packaging steels, electro plated steels, electrical steels and narrow strip;

construction products, including structural steel, floors, walls, roofs, modular and building components; agricultural implements, and bearings.

It offers auto assembly components, ball bearings, tapered roller bearings, magneto bearings, clutch release assemblies, fan support assemblies and cylindrical roller bearings.

Its brands include Tata Structura, TISCON, Tata Shaktee, Tata Astrum and Tata Steelium.
